Violence betwen Boca Juniors fans escalates

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – The fans of Boca Juniors, one of Argentina's most popular football teams, made national headlines after a clash between rival factions before the match against Argentinos Juniors on 15 March. The incident saw an exchange of blows and gunfire, reported ANSA, leaving a 79-year-old woman injured by gunshot.
Clarín reported that the dispute arose over control of “La 12”, Boca's largest fan group and that Richard William Laluz Fernández, alias “El Uruguayo” (The Uruguayan), challenged current leader Mauro Martín, to a duel in the near future.
Laluz also accused Martín of firing shots during Sunday's incidents. Local police are looking at closed-circuit camera footage of the area to identify the gunman.
“Let's see each other 300 or 500m away and whoever is left standing, wins. Not like Sunday where there were kids and that poor lady,” said "El Uruguayo" in front of dozens of sports journalists, who took his words as a sure sign of future problems.
La Nación explained that Laluz was challenging Martín to a duel, and the old lady mentioned was Delia Campos, who was shot in the leg as she was leaving McDonald’s.
The firearms incident on 15 March also tainted Boca's security chief, identified in Crítica as Néstor Gago, and local police officers, who did nothing to prevent the incident.
According to Laluz, “he [Gago] is to blame for this whole thing, he told us there wouldn't be any problems if we came to the match, that he would help us” and added “[the police] had cleared the area and [Martín's faction] started firing shots right in front of the police officers,” who did nothing to stop the violence. Laluz claimed there was connivance between the police, club authorities and the rival faction.
Meanwhile, Martín denied he was in the place of the clash and was willing to prove in court that he was on the motorway when the incidents happened.
The income generated from selling tickets allocated to fans, trips to away matches and parking spaces at Boca games are the main reasons for wanting to take control of fan groups, reported Clarín
